Religion

At Saint John’s Academy the primary goal is to create a Catholic environment in which the teachings of Gospel values are infused in all content areas of curricula. Creating “teachable moments” that reveal to our students their ability to be people in communion with Jesus Christ is at the heart of Catholic education at SJA.

Our religion instruction, in grades prek-8,  is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark (RCAN) Curriculum. The curriculum addresses the following by grade level:

Prekindergarten and Kindergarten- Many Signs of God’s Love

Grades 1-2: God’s Love for Us

Grade 3: The Church and Its Beliefs

Grades 4-6: Using the Christian Life with the Sacraments and the Scriptures

Grades 7-8: Jesus and His Church

Assessments in religion include the ACRE: Assessment of Children/Youth Religious Education (in grade 5), sacramental preparation and completion (in grade 2), traditional assessments in faith knowledge (formative and summative),independent/ group projects, and service work.
