For grades 3-8, our program plays in the CYO Athletic Basketball league which is sponsored by the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, under the the Archdiocese of Newark.
Grades 3-4 are considered PeeWee’s and are intended to be less 'competitive’ than 5th - 8th, providing a place for development while introducing players to competitive play. We strongly encourage and expect our coaches to focus on development, not winning, at this age. From grades 5-8, the level of competitiveness increases significantly.
Below are the grade brackets and competition structure for the CYO Athletic Basketball League, with each grouping having up to 4 divisions based on enrollment:
- 3rd & 4th grade
- 5th & 6th grade
- 7th & 8th grade
Please note the following:
- Each bracket includes a boys and a girls division - there are NO co-ed teams.
- Some teams may be mixed with both grades, whereas other teams may be all from the same grade. This depends on enrollment numbers.
- All schools that participate in this league must follow the Archdiocesan Athletics Handbook.
- There are playoffs and championship games for each division, as well as an All Star game.
- Typically, most teams play approximately 14 – 20 games per season.
- Games have four quarters, eight minutes per quarter.
